Many of us understand that nursing is more than a career; it’s a calling, a journey that shapes who you are and how you impact the world. However, we did not understand this before getting into the career. Becoming a nurse wasn’t just about a profession but about purpose, resilience, and a deep desire to make a difference in people’s lives. I wanted to be part of that world where kindness and knowledge could transform lives.
Here’s my tale.
The Early Spark
But what truly solidified my decision to pursue nursing was a personal experience. One day, I was sick, and she administered an injection to me, which reduced my fever and made me feel better. It was magical, and I wanted to be like her someday. As a child, I saw my dad's younger sister wearing the white nursing uniform, what we know as the nightingale uniform. I saw how she treated people.
Growing up, I was always drawn to helping others and treating them like my aunt. She cared for sick family members and committed her time to our community. I felt an innate pull toward providing comfort and support.
Although, as a child, I had a phobia for injections and would scream down the entire hospital anytime I was sick and had to get one. But I wanted to be the one administering the injections. Seeing my aunt's dedication, empathy, and ability to provide treatment and hope inspired me.
Choosing Nursing as a Career
Nursing was the ideal career path, perfectly combining science, compassion, and problem-solving skills. Although my parents wanted me to study medicine, God had his plans. When I got into school, I knew it wouldn’t be easy—nursing school, clinical rotations, and long shifts posed challenges. I nearly gave up, but I remained determined to pursue my passion.
Going through nursing school shaped me into a compassionate and empathic individual. Nursing offered what I was searching for: an opportunity to make a tangible impact. I wanted to be there for patients during their most vulnerable moments, offering care and comfort. The thought of being the person who could make someone’s day a little brighter or ease their pain filled me with a sense of purpose.
The Journey to Becoming a Nurse
My journey through nursing school was filled with a plethora of emotions. Sometimes, I was filled with excitement and joy, but I also experienced moments of stress, sleepless nights, and growth. The first six months were uncertain, and we were told we would not be considered nursing students until we passed the weeding examination.
On my capping day, I was officially confirmed as a nursing student, and I felt an overwhelming sense of responsibility stepping into the clinical setting. I knew I had to be one of the best nurses there was. It wasn’t just about learning technical skills but also about building trust with patients and being present for them in ways that truly mattered.
One of the most rewarding moments in nursing school was providing empathic and compassionate care to all my patients. Taking time to listen and care for them brought a sense of fulfillment. It was and is still a reminder of why I chose this path and reinforces my commitment to nursing.
Why I Continue to Love Nursing
Today, as a family nurse practitioner with a doctorate in nursing. I look back on my journey with immense gratitude. Nursing has taught me resilience, empathy, and the value of human connection. It’s a profession that challenges you daily but rewards you in ways that words can’t fully capture.
The opportunity to educate, advocate, and heal keeps me passionate about this field. Whether guiding patients through chronic disease management, mentoring nursing students, or simply holding someone’s hand during a tough moment, I know I’m living out my purpose.
My Message to Aspiring Nurses
If you’re considering a career in nursing, know this: it’s not just about the science of medicine—it’s about the art of caring. Nursing requires a strong heart, curiosity, and a willingness to grow through challenges. But the rewards are immeasurable.
To all the future nurses out there: your journey will be tough, but it will shape you into someone stronger, wiser, and more compassionate than you ever thought possible. Embrace it, and let your passion guide you.
This is my story, but it’s also shared by countless nurses who dedicate their lives to making a difference. What’s your story? I’d love to hear what inspired you to consider or pursue nursing. Share your journey in the comments or connect with me—I’m here to support and cheer you on.
